Silver ions at trace levels of approximately 0.015 ppm silver are used to control bacteria and viruses. Chlorine works synergistically with ionization and is recommended at a barely detectable level of 0.4 ppm, 1quart (1 litre) of liquid bleach in a typical 30,000 gallon pool.

This volume is based on the amount of metal atoms in a pair of electrodes diluted at 1 ppm.  For example a pair of our 6 inch copper electrodes are 6″ x 1.25″ x 0.25″ have a total consumable electrode weight of approximately  558 grams.  This would charge 55,800 litres with 1 ppm (1 mg/l) or about 100,000 gallons with 0.1 ppm.
The amount of atoms released per second is dependent on total surface area of the electrodes and the electrical current (up to 3 amperes) applied to the immersed electrodes. Consequently the build-up to 0.1 ppm takes many days in a typical 20,000 gallon swimming pool or drinking water holding tank.
Copper electrodes are intended primarily for pools.  Our electrodes have a larger than usual surface area (flat rather than round rods) for greater conductivity in pure water with low electrical conductivity. We can also design the electrode cartage to have one copper and one silver, with the alternating polarity switch on the anode will alternate from copper to silver and silver to copper allowing both silver and copper ions in the water.

COOLING TOWERS: Avoiding Corrosion, Scaling, Biofouling with copper/silver (Cu/Ag) Ionization

Cooling towers are used in various industries and municipalities to remove heat from process streams and buildings. In these evaporative coolers, cooling water is brought into direct contact with the surrounding air, causing heat to be dissipated to the atmosphere by the evaporation of water and energy to be removed due to the latent heat of vaporization of water.
When microorganisms from the surrounding environment are brought into contact with the cooling water, there is a potential for microbe proliferation and corrosion problems. Modern cooling water systems operate with nutrient-rich cooling waters at a neutral to slightly basic pH and warm temperatures, a comfortable environment for microbacterial growth. In this environment, microorganisms have a tendency to adhere to and build a biofilm on heat transfer surfaces, reducing the efficiency of the cooling system.
Clean systems, with few deposits and low microbacterial growth, have greatly reduced probability of scaling and corrosion than dirty systems. In clean systems, biocides can easily reach and protect heat transfer surfaces, while fouled systems with significant biofilm formations can serve as an adhesive seed for subsequent mineral deposits and corrosion products. This can prevent treated water from reaching heat transfer surfaces, allowing corrosion and mineral scaling to carry on beneath the deposits. For these reasons, microbiological control should be the first order of priority.
Microbiological control becomes increasingly important due to the possibility of mineral concentration in the water circulated throughout the system increasing during normal operation. The evaporation of water during the cooling process leaves scale-forming minerals behind, and make-up waters that are added to the cooling water to account for evaporation, drift and blowdown tend to be high in mineral content and aggressive to metals. These problems can enhance the probability of scaling and corrosion, impeding heat transfer efficiency, increasing energy consumption and adding to maintenance costs.
Conventional chemical treatment methods used to control scaling and biofouling problems often present problems of their own in storage and handling, and have potential environmental impacts. These drawbacks, along with the high costs of conventional biocides and chemicals, increasing water and sewer charges, and more stringent regulations for blowdown water discharge, have sparked the need for alternative treatment methods.
Cu/Ag Ionization is currently considered by many as a necessary alternative to traditional cooling water treatment methods such as chlorine. Cu/Ag Ionization is added to the circulating water in the tower to kill bacteria, viruses, and algae in the aqueous environment. Cu/Ag Ionization is the most powerful and cost-effective commercially available, and will attack all types of microorganisms indiscriminately. If Cu/Ag Ionization is properly applied, with sufficient amperage of at least 3 amps and large Cu/Ag electrodes, there is no regrowth of microorganisms within the process, unless they are protected by particulates in the water. Cu/Ag Ionization is particularly effective in controlling the growth of Legionella, a common bacterium that can cause Legionnaire’s Disease found in open evaporative cooling systems. And unlike conventional treatments, Cu/Ag Ionization does not produce harmful residuals and is not lost to evaporation. Cu/Ag Ionization also virtually eliminates safety problems associated with shipping and handling of chemical biocides, as it is generated on-site.
Implementation of Cu/Ag Ionization into cooling tower water can result in an increase in the cycles of concentration, allowing cooling water to be circulated many more times throughout the process. Therefore, the volume of make-up water required will decrease, which can result in net reduction in mineral content and a decrease in hardness scale formation on heat transfer surfaces. Further scale reduction is possible by surface active compounds that may be produced from oxidation byproducts.
